It saddens me to hear that Egan closed this beautiful church. As far back as I can remember Our Lady Queen of Angels, going back to late 50s, I once lived in one of the buildings in the Thomas Jefferson Housing Projects. It was the one that directly faced the entrance to Our Lady Queen of Angels, 228 E. 115th St. Building. I saw the church as a magnificent spiritual oasis surrounded by the many stone and concrete boxes made by the city to warehouse poor Blacks and Latinos. Inside and out, the church is a beautiful architectural structure tucked inside a cul de sac. I can't figure out why the NYC Landmark Commission had not given it landmark designation years ago. I hope that community will continue to fight to save this church from the wrecker's ball. I wonder where in the hell are our political leaders and elected officials? Does anybody here remember the Young Lords? In the late 60s, a group of young Latino activists took over a church on E. 110th Street when it failed to serve the needs of the community. So, under what earthly authority does this crude Archbishop lock the Church out of the building that is built and maintained by the sacrifice of the Assembly of People, the true Body of Christ? I attended a meeting where Carmen and some of the other parishioners spoke. I found them to be deeply religious, devoted and impassioned. I felt that the Holy Spirit was with them.
